The Green

Our Neighbourhood Garden by the Schinkel

Welcome to the Website of The Green

The Green is a small community garden around the playground at Schinkelhavenstraat, lovingly cared for by local volunteers.
Together we water, weed, plant and keep the space clean and welcoming for everyone - especially children and neighbours who use it every day. We believe that a little care can make a big difference.

If you see us working, feel free to say hello - and if you’d like to join, you are very welcome!

Below you can find a list with all the plants and trees as well as their location on the map. Click on the name of the plant to see the details.

The People behind The Green & what we do

The Green is more than a patch of nature - it’s a shared space where children play, residents meet, and birds find a home again. You can explore the plant map, learn the names of the species, and see the sponsors who helped make this possible.

To keep The Green beautiful, healthy, and alive through the seasons, we follow a simple year plan, carried out by two groups of neighbours:

🪴 The Green Team Cares for our plants: watering, weeding, tending plants, and creating a thriving home for birds, insects, and flowers.

🧹 The Clean Team Keeps the area fresh and welcoming: clearing litter, raking the sandpit, blowing leaves, maintaining the paths.

(All planting decisions stay within one coordinated vision to keep the garden balanced and thoughtfully planned.)

Together, these teams ensure that The Green is a place of joy - for people and wildlife alike.

January – February

The quiet months.
We repair winter damage, tidy branches, and make small checks.
The Clean Team keeps the area welcoming even on cold days.

Asa will cut back where necessary and if it’s a hot month we can start watering. The Clean Team cleans the area and keeps the sandpit tidy

April

Everything wakes up.
We weed, clean the bird baths, refresh nest boxes and water if necessary. The Clean Team keeps the play areas safe and the sandpit tidy

May

Full growth.
Watering when needed. Weeding. The Clean Team keeps the play areas safe and the sandpit tidy

In hot spells we water frequently.
The Clean Team keeps the play areas safe and the sandpit tidy.
